How vitamins for hair loss can help

There is another approach to the problem of hair loss, however: hair loss vitamins and nutritional supplements. These have the advantage of being far more natural than chemicals like minoxidil; some of the vitamins used are even produced by the human body itself, although not in sufficient quantity to deal with the hair loss issue. That’s why supplementation is desired.

Vitamins for hair loss include several names you might recognize, and others you might not:

  • Vitamin B3, also called niacin
  • Vitamin B5, also called pantothenic acid
  • Vitamin B7, also called biotin
  • Vitamin B9, also called folic acid
  • Vitamin E

It’s not hard to see from the list above that a good B-vitamin complex will supply most of the hair loss vitamins experts recommend. Add a multivitamin to that to supply the Vitamin E and you’ll be covering all the bases. It’s essential, however, to not take too much Vitamin A when you start supplementing. Don’t exceed the recommended daily allowance (RDA) listed on the back of the bottle. Excessive Vitamin A intake has been linked to hair loss itself.

How do hair loss vitamins work?

No one vitamin is responsible for the entire hair growth cycle, which is why it is so important to take a multivitamin or B-complex tablet. Each vitamin tends to assist with one or two specific functions, which combined, help contribute to the growth of healthy hair.

Folic acid, for example, is known to help hair to grow faster and thicker. Many beauticians and hairdressers recommend that their clients take a regular supplement of folic acid even when excessive loss isn’t a problem; folic acid simply makes for a fuller, more beautiful head of hair.

Niacin and pantothenic acid both assist the body to improve blood circulation, especially in the scalp area. This increased circulation means that more nutrients and oxygen are arriving at the hair follicles, nourishing them so that they can do the best possible job. The overall effect of these hair loss vitamins, therefore, is to cause faster, stronger hair regrowth. They may even cause follicles which would have switched off permanently to stay alive, growing hair.

Vitamin B5 is also known to help follicles keep growing hair that keeps it color, instead of strands of gray – an important thing to keep in mind, since graying hair can be just as upsetting as thinning hair, especially to women.

Biotin strengthens the hair follicles themselves, making them thicker and more durable. In addition, it provides elasticity to both hair and nails, which helps their cells flex instead of break when under stress.
